A recent study by the American Thoracic Society (ATS)  takes a deeper look at the connection between childhood asthma and peanut allergies.  There certainly has been some discussion, focus, and research in the recent years and months focusing on peanut allergies, why children are developing them, and how they can be prevented or avoided.  This study revealed that many children who have asthma have a sensitivity to peanuts.  Many of the respiratory symptoms of peanut allergy and asthma go hand in hand, in fact they mirror each other. Observing and testing a select cohort of children with asthma at a pulmonary clinic lead scientists and researchers to conclude that prevalence of peanut sensitivity was high. Since many of the children and their families did not suspect such an allergy, it is concluded that screening asthmatic children for peanut sensitivity may help to improve their treatment particularly in cases that have been difficult to manage.  Read More

EagleBio’s Creatinine Microplate Assay Kit Used in Studying High Incidence of Lung Cancer in Singapore Women

A recent study was conducted at the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota utilizing EagleBio’s Creatinine Microplate Assay, a kit designed for the quantitative determination of creatinine in urine by a microplate assay. This assay is part of our Oxidative Assay Kit Line which is a comprehensive group consisting of a numerous valuable products for assisting scientists in fields of research such as diabetes, cancer, aging, and other similar areas of study. Check the product page for full details on the kit or view the links below to find a new publication referencing our Creatinine Microplate Assay.

Publication:

Elevated Levels of Mercapturic Acids of Acrolein and Crotonaldehyde in the Urine of Chinese Women in Singapore Who Regularly Cook at Home

Study Summary:

This study observed  a cohort of women who frequently used a wok for cooking but did not smoke cigarettes, drink alcoholic beverages, or participate in other health-risk behavior related to lung cancer. Researchers utilize EagleBio’s Creatinine Microplate Assay to measure and assess the creatinine levels as well as high throughput liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to measure 3-HPMA and HMPMA.

It was discovered that women had significantly increased levels of urinary 3-HPMA and HMPMA, the respective mercapturic acids of acrolein and crotonaldehyde, and the levels of the biomarkers increased with increasing cooking frequency. Such findings do in fact confirm results and observations from previous studies performed on a much smaller sampling of Chinese women.

In conclusion, with the results from this study as well as several other epidemiological studies reveal the need for improved ventilation and other preventative measures in order to effectively remove such cooking fumes.

Testosterone: Why Higher Levels are Connected to Prostrate Enlargement

A recent study at the University of California – Santa Barbara (UCSB) focused on testosterone levels in a cohort of men in the US and compared results to previous research on a group of 350 adult males in Tsimane,Bolivia where researchers examined the prevalence of Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)(aka. prostrate enlargement). BPH is one of the most prevalent diseases among aging men in the US.  The causes and underlying factors that contribute to this disease have not yet been identified, thus the reason for this study.

It has been explained in recent publicationsthat men in Tsimane have 30% lower testosterone levels because of environmental (numerous parasites and pathogens) and lifestyle factors (hunting, fishing, foraging: causing the need to maintain testosterone in order to maintain muscle mass). Antropologists from UCSB believe that increased levels of testosterone compromises the immune system in order to keep it low in environments where parasites and pathogens are rampant. It was discovered that the cases of advanced prostrate enlargement were nonexistent.

Because men in the US have a higher level of testosterone and their levels decrease with age, there has been a trend to supplement this decline with replacement therapy. It is believed that interfering with Mother Nature may not be the best choice and we are left to wonder, is this what is causing the increase in prostrate cancer and other diseases?  Read More

Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein Contributes to Atherogenesis via Co-activation of Macrophages and Mast Cells

Study Summary:

Static and microfluidic flow experiments were performed to investigate the number of adherent monocytes on vascular endothelium that are activated by supernatants of oxLDL-treated macrophages and mast cells or directly by oxLDL. Based on results from this study, it was discovered that the degranulation of mast cells during allergy attacks could lead to increases in the histamine concentration near or inside atherosclerotic lesions.  In fact, the amount of histamine that is released can be significantly more than that produced by oxLDL-activated mast cells. Therefore, this suggests that allergy attacks can cause weakening of the endothelium already exposed to TNF-α and histamine from oxLDL-activated macrophages and mast cells.

The final conclusion from this study was that individuals with allergy or asthma who have an elevated amount of histamine in tissues are in fact at very high risk for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease if they also have a lipid-rich diet. Other recent studies support this data and point out that allergy and asthma contribute to the development of atherosclerosis.

Promising New Target for the Treatment of Chronic Pain

A recent study at the University of Texas at Dallas focused on following the sequence of pain impulses traveling from the brain to the spinal cord in mice.  These researchers were interested in learning more about chronic pain as well as the intricate biological processes and chemicals that are involved. The goal of this research was to better understand the mechanisms that cause and contribute to chronic pain in order to point to more effective treatments. The results of this study revealed that by removing a collection of neurons called A11 that contain dopamine, chronic pain was selectively diminished.

More than 100 million people in the US suffer from chronic pain and it is an extremely costly and debilitating medical condition.  This study and its findings bring promise to new future target medicines. Read More

Major Breakthrough for Alzheimer’s: Treatment in the Horizon

The amazing, groundbreaking results from a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Cenna Biosciences, Inc. could ultimately translate into human treatment. They have discovered compounds that block beta amyloids in mice. In fact, this new method has the potential to completely halt the disease all together which other methods in the past have not been able to do. Other drugs and research from previous studies have targeted cleaving beta amyloid from its larger precursor protein but in the process these drugs have cleaved other proteins as well causing undesirable effects on the body.

The accumulation and build up of amyloids plaques have been believed to cause the irreversible damage in the brain that affects cognitive function and other symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s. Therefore, a compound that directly attacks amyloids is key to successful treatment and this new compound (P8 Compound) does just that. Read More
