Adipose-specific Vdr deletion alters body fat and enhances mammary epithelial density

 

Study Summary:

The objective of this study was to examine the role of Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) in adipose tissue with a strong focus on the mammary gland. Vitamin D status has been associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome and several cancers such as colon and breast. It is known that adipocytes express VDR and obesity is a known risk factor for cancer. Researchers performing this study sought to explore the intricacies of adipocytes,the actions of vitamin D in adipose tissue, and how they may contribute to its cancer protective effects. 

The results of this study revealed that Vdr in mature adipocytes alters the metabolic response to high fat diets and exerts anti-proliferative effects on the mammary epithelium.

A recent study at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia revealed that light exposure plays a role in the weight of preschool children. Researchers studied children aged three to five, from six Brisbane childcare centers. At time 1, they measured children’s sleep, activity and light exposure for a two week period, along with height and weight to calculate their BMI, then followed up 12-months later.

PhD student, Cassandra Pattinson explained,”The circadian clock — also known as the internal body clock — is largely driven by our exposure to light and the timing of when that happens. It impacts on sleep patterns, weight gain or loss, hormonal changes and our mood.” 

The findings of this research suggested that exposure to different types of light (both artificial and natural) at different times now needs to be part of the conversation about the weight of children. Read More

Study Summary:

The objective of this study was designed to investigate the probable mechanisms of anti-hyperglycemic activity of B. Vulgaris. According to Yanarda G R et al. in Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology,Beta vulgaris subsp. Cicla, also known as Chard, is a leafy green vegetable, with a red stalk and is widely consumed throughout the world. It has been traditionally used as an anti-hyperglycemic nutritional supplement in Turkey. Nutrition therapy is an important part of diabetes self-management education.

It is widely known that plant extracts often contain a large amount of carbohydrates, which are eventually digested to glucose, hence, might be the principal stimulus for insulin secretion. Therefore,this study has been designed to identify the non-glucose stimulants that might be responsible for any enhancement in level of insulin secretions observed. For this study, they had chosen a total of 10 hormones, based on their established significance in insulin secretion.

A recent study by Stanford University Scientists demonstrated that they could alter brain activity of rats and either wake them up or put them in an unconscious state. The study was published ineLIFE, was partially funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Scientists studied how the thalamus tunes brain activity during different states of consciousness in rats. Central thalamus plays a critical role in forebrain arousal and organized behavior. However, network-level mechanisms that link its activity to brain state remain a mystery.To investigate and explore the effects of the thalamus on the brain, they studied possible mechanisms underlying the frequency-dependent cortical inhibition, by performing recordings in zona incerta, where 10, but not 40, Hz stimulation evoked spindle-like oscillations. In other words, scientists were trying to stimulate thalamic neurons to evoke a response in the brain. Dr. Lee who performed the study suggests, the central thalamus works similar to a radio dial that tunes the brain to different states of activity or arousal. 

Th results of this study did in fact demonstrate how the circuits of the brain can regulate arousal states. According to Dr. Lee,“We hope to use this knowledge to develop better treatments for brain injuries and other neurological disorders.”

Anemia Among Children Exposed to Polyparasitism in Coastal Kenya

Study Summary:

Anemia represents a substantial problem for children living in areas with limited resources and significant parasite burden. The objective for this research was to evaluate the potential links between low hemoglobin and socioeconomic factors, nutritional status, hemoglobinopathy, and/or parasite infection. A cross-sectional study was performed utilizing a cohort of 254 Kenyan children of early school-age in a setting endemic for multiple chronic parasitic infections to explore mechanisms of their anemia. 

Complete venous blood cell counts revealed a high prevalence of local childhood anemia (79%). EagleBio’s Transferrin (TfR) Receptor ELISA (TfR) was used to measure TfR values in serum samples.

Children in the youngest age group had the greatest odds of iron deficiency (OR: 10.0, 95% CI: 3.9, 26).Although older children aged 9–11 years had less anemia, they had more detectable malaria, Schistosoma infection, hookworm, and proportionately more non-IDA.  Anemia in this setting appears multi-factorial such that chronic inflammation and iron deficiency need to be addressed together as part of integrated management of childhood anemia.
