Eagle Bio’s 25(OH) Vitamind D ELISA Assay Kit was used in a recent study. The Vitamin D 25(OH) ELISA is a quick, simple, and sensitive assay for the quantitative determination of Vitamin D in human serum and plasma. This assay is a part of our Bone Metabolism Assay Kit line, an assay line that offers a comprehensive product group for analyzing  the concentration of a variety of samples in serum, plasma, tissue, saliva, and urine.

Common Variants rs11191548 near the CYP17A1 Gene is associated with Hypertension and the Serum 25(OH) D levels in Han Chinese

Zhang, Ning et al. (2018). Common Variants rs11191548 near the CYP17A1 Gene is associated with Hypertension and the Serum 25(OH) D levels in Han Chinese. Journal of Human Genetics. 63:731-737.

Summary:

This study investigated the relationship between hypertension and serum 25(OH) Vitamin D levels in Han Chinese in association with genetic varints in the CYP17A1 gene. It was determined that the rs11191548 mutation in the CYP17A1 gene is associated with higher 25(OH) Vitamin D levels in those with hypertension.

Vitamin-D Could Help Patients with Insomnia

In a new study released by Nutritional Neuroscience, Vitamin D supplements may increase quality of sleep in some patients. A double blind, clinical trial was conducted on 89 people between 20-50 years old. The patients were divided into two groups; 44 who will take at least 50,000 units of vitamin D for 8 weeks, and 45 people who will take a placebo. In order to understand each patients quality of sleep they all performed a Petersburg’s Sleep Quality QuestionnaireInternational Physical Activity Questionnaire, general information questionnaire, sun exposure, vitamin D serum level and 3-day food record questionnaire both before and after the study.

The results of this study showed that a decrease in vitamin D levels also decreases the quality of sleep a patient has. Those patients that took the vitamin D supplements showed a decrease in sleep latency, as well as a better sleep score than those who took a placebo. The conclusion of this study shows promising insight into future studies as ways to help those who suffer from a diagnosed sleep disorder with the use of vitamin D therapies.

“The need for vitamin D supplementation of dairy cattle has been known for the better part of the last century and is well appreciated by dairy producers and nutritionists. Whether current recommendations and practices for supplemental vitamin D are meeting the needs of dairy cattle, however, is not well known. The vitamin D status of animals is reliably indicated by the concentration of the 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] metabolite in serum or plasma, with a concentration of 30 ng/mL proposed as a lower threshold for sufficiency. The objective of this study was to determine the typical serum 25(OH)D concentrations of dairy cattle across various dairy operations….” Read More

Interesting Study Reveals Possible Link Between Vitamin D and Autism

A recent study at the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) investigated the effect that Vitamin D may have on social behavior associated with autism.  This research demonstrated that three hormones in the brain that affect social behavior: serotonin, oxytocin, and vasopressin are activated by the vitamin D hormone. In fact, researchers discovered that vitamin D has several vital roles and may be necessary for the production of serotonin in the brain. The results of this study further revealed that Vitamin D, tryptophan, and omega 3 fatty acids supplementation could potentially lift serotonin levels in the brain enough to relieve some of the symptoms without side effects.  Learn More
