Complement Factor H-Related Protein 5 (FHR-5) ELISA Kit
Complement Factor H-related protein 5 (FHR-5) is a glycoprotein belonging to the factor H-related protein family, which shares structural similarities with Complement Factor H (CFH), an important regulator of the complement system. FHR-5 is produced primarily by the liver and is also expressed by cells including monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. FHR-5 interacts with several host ligands and complement components, including C3b, heparin, C-reactive protein (CRP), pentraxin 3 (PTX3), and components of the extracellular matrix. Through these interactions, FHR-5 may influence complement activation and regulation, particularly within the alternative pathway. FHR-5 has also been proposed to compete with Factor H for binding to certain ligands, potentially affecting local complement regulation. The precise mechanisms and biological significance of these activities remain under investigation.
In research settings, FHR-5 is studied to better understand complement regulation, alternative pathway activation, and mechanisms of complement-mediated inflammation and tissue injury. Researchers investigate FHR-5 concentrations, ligand interactions, and genetic variation to characterize its potential contribution to complement dysregulation. FHR-5 is also studied in experimental models of kidney disease and other inflammatory conditions to investigate how changes in complement regulation may contribute to disease development and progression. Quantitative measurement of FHR-5 can provide additional information for investigating complement activity and its relationship to disease-associated processes.
In clinical research, genetic variations in the CFHR5 gene and alterations in FHR-5 have been investigated in complement-mediated diseases, including atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), IgA nephropathy (IgAN), and C3 glomerulopathy (C3G). FHR-5 has been detected in both circulating and glomerular deposits in certain kidney diseases, although its precise contribution to disease pathogenesis remains an area of ongoing research. Measuring FHR-5 alongside other complement components and genetic markers can help researchers investigate complement dysregulation and better understand the mechanisms underlying complement-mediated diseases.
