Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) is a G-protein-coupled receptor that modulates excitatory neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity in the central nervous system. It plays a critical role in learning, memory, and neurodevelopment. Dysregulation of mGluR5 signaling has been implicated in a range of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and fragile X syndrome.
