The Porcine (Pig) Alternative Complement Pathway ELISA Kit is intended for the qualitative/semi-quantitative determination of activation of the alternative pathway of the complement system in porcine serum and plasma samples. The Porcine (Pig) Alternative Complement Pathway ELISA Kit is for research use only and not to be used for diagnostic procedures.

Porcine (Pig) Alternative Complement Pathway Assay Kit

The complement system is an important component of the innate immune response and contributes to the first line of defense against foreign pathogens. It consists of a complex network of proteins and receptors found in the circulation, tissues, and other body fluids and also interacts with the adaptive immune system. Complement activation occurs through three pathways: the classical, lectin, and alternative pathways, which converge on activation of the central complement component C3 and ultimately lead to formation of terminal complement components, including the C5b-9 terminal complement complex (TCC). The alternative pathway can be activated directly by certain microbial surfaces and other activating structures and also functions as an amplification pathway for complement activation initiated through the classical and lectin pathways. Activation of the alternative pathway leads to formation of C3 convertase, generation of C3b, and progression toward terminal complement activation.

In research settings, assessment of alternative complement pathway activity is used to investigate innate immune responses, inflammation, pathogen recognition, and complement-mediated disease mechanisms. Researchers can evaluate alternative pathway activity in experimental models of infectious, autoimmune, and inflammatory conditions and investigate how alterations in complement components affect pathway activation. Alternative pathway activity can also be assessed alongside the classical and lectin pathways to characterize pathway-specific complement responses and investigate complement deficiencies or functional abnormalities in porcine models.

In clinical and veterinary research, alterations in alternative pathway components and activity have been investigated in infectious, inflammatory, and complement-mediated conditions. Deficiencies or functional abnormalities involving alternative pathway regulators, including properdin and other complement components, may influence susceptibility to infection or contribute to uncontrolled complement activation. Measuring alternative pathway activity, together with assessments of the classical and lectin pathways and individual complement components, can help researchers characterize complement function and investigate pathway-specific abnormalities. ELISA-based pathway assays provide a convenient approach for evaluating alternative complement pathway activation in experimental porcine serum and plasma samples.
