Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), the enzyme responsible for converting L-arginine into nitric oxide (NO). NO plays a critical role in maintaining vascular tone and endothelial function, and disruptions in its production are associated with a variety of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Elevated ADMA levels have been linked to endothelial dysfunction and increased risk for conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure. Because ADMA interferes with NO production, it serves as a valuable biomarker for assessing vascular health and cardiovascular risk.
In research and clinical settings, ADMA ELISAs provide a reliable and sensitive method for detecting its concentration in biological fluids. The ADMA ELISA Kit enables quantitative determination of derivatized ADMA in serum or EDTA plasma. During sample preparation, ADMA is converted into N-acyl-ADMA, which then competes with plate-bound antigen for binding to specific rabbit anti-N-acyl-ADMA antibodies. After the unbound components are washed away, a peroxidase-conjugated secondary antibody and TMB substrate are used to produce a measurable signal at 450 nm.
The competitive format of the assay ensures that signal intensity is inversely proportional to the concentration of ADMA in the sample, allowing for precise quantification. This makes the ADMA ELISA a powerful tool in both research and clinical environments for monitoring disease progression, evaluating endothelial function, and assessing the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions that target NO pathways.
