Human Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase protein primarily produced by the liver in response to inflammatory stimuli, such as infection, trauma, or tissue injury. Its expression is regulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α. During acute-phase responses, SAA levels can increase by up to 1,000-fold within 24 hours, making it a sensitive biomarker for systemic inflammation. SAA plays roles in lipid metabolism, immune cell recruitment, and modulation of the inflammatory response.
In clinical settings, SAA is used as a biomarker to detect and monitor acute and chronic inflammatory conditions, including infections, autoimmune diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), and inflammatory bowel disease. It is also useful for tracking disease activity and response to therapy, often in conjunction with other markers like C-reactive protein (CRP). Importantly, persistently elevated SAA levels can be associated with the risk of secondary amyloidosis, a condition where SAA-derived amyloid deposits accumulate in organs.
In research, SAA is studied for its involvement in the pathophysiology of inflammation, chronic diseases, and cancer. It is also used to investigate host immune responses and to evaluate the efficacy of anti-inflammatory drugs. Its rapid and dynamic response to inflammation makes it a valuable tool for understanding both acute and chronic inflammatory processes in human health and disease.
