Beta-2 microglobulin (β2M) is a low molecular weight protein that forms the light chain component of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules, which are present on the surface of nearly all nucleated cells. It is released into circulation during normal cell turnover and is freely filtered by the glomeruli and almost completely reabsorbed by the renal proximal tubules. Elevated levels of β2M in biological fluids can reflect increased cell turnover, immune activation, or impaired renal function. In rats, as in humans, β2M serves as a sensitive biomarker for renal tubular injury and can provide insight into systemic immune or inflammatory responses.
