Fecal Adenovirus Antigen is a diagnostic biomarker used for the detection of enteric adenovirus infections, particularly types 40 and 41, which are a major cause of prolonged diarrhea in young children. These adenoviruses are second only to rotavirus in contributing to pediatric diarrheal illness, especially in developing countries where such infections significantly contribute to childhood morbidity and mortality. The diarrhea caused by adenovirus typically lasts 7–8 days—longer than rotavirus-induced symptoms—and can occur with additional manifestations like conjunctivitis or respiratory infections.
Adenoviruses are a diverse group, with 49 known human-infecting serotypes. While Ad40 and Ad41 target the gastrointestinal tract, other types such as 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 are more commonly associated with respiratory, urinary, and neurological symptoms. In young children, infections can present as bronchiolitis, pneumonia, or even encephalitis. Due to this wide spectrum of clinical presentations, specific antigen detection in stool is essential for accurate diagnosis, particularly in gastrointestinal cases.
In research and clinical settings, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is the primary tool used to detect fecal adenovirus antigens due to its high sensitivity and ease of use. The availability of rapid and specific assays enables early diagnosis, timely intervention, and the ability to monitor disease prevalence and outbreaks, particularly in pediatric care and public health surveillance.
