Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase protein that plays a key role in the innate immune response of dogs and other mammals. Synthesized primarily by the liver in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), SAA concentrations can increase dramatically—up to 1000-fold—within 24–48 hours following tissue injury, infection, or inflammation. In healthy dogs, baseline SAA levels are typically very low or undetectable, making it a highly sensitive biomarker for detecting systemic inflammation.

In clinical veterinary medicine, canine SAA serves as a valuable diagnostic and prognostic biomarker. It is used to monitor inflammatory diseases, infections, immune-mediated conditions, and post-surgical recovery. Because of its rapid rise and fall in response to changes in inflammatory status, SAA is particularly useful for tracking disease progression and therapeutic response more dynamically than traditional markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) or leukocyte counts.

In research settings, canine SAA is widely employed as a quantitative indicator of inflammation in experimental models of infection, trauma, and autoimmune disorders. Its measurement helps evaluate the biological impact of new drugs, vaccines, or therapeutic interventions targeting the inflammatory response. The sensitivity, reproducibility, and non-specificity of SAA to a wide range of inflammatory stimuli make it an essential biomarker for both basic and applied studies in veterinary immunology and translational research.
