Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) is a small glycoprotein expressed in neutrophils and various tissues, including the kidney, liver, and lungs. It plays a crucial role in innate immunity by binding siderophores to sequester iron, thereby limiting bacterial growth. NGAL is also highly sensitive to renal tubular injury, as its expression increases rapidly in response to kidney stress or damage. Because of this, NGAL has emerged as a key biomarker for early detection of acute kidney injury (AKI) in both humans and animals, including canines.

The canine NGAL ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) enables the quantitative measurement of NGAL levels in serum, plasma, or urine. In research, this assay is used to study the mechanisms of kidney injury, inflammation, and infectious diseases in dogs. Researchers also employ NGAL measurements to evaluate novel therapeutics aimed at protecting renal function or mitigating inflammatory responses, as well as to investigate the kinetics of NGAL release during different disease processes.

Clinically, canine NGAL ELISA is particularly valuable for early diagnosis and monitoring of acute kidney injury, often detecting renal stress before traditional markers like serum creatinine show abnormalities. It can also be used to monitor disease progression in chronic kidney disease, assess response to treatments, and evaluate systemic inflammatory conditions where NGAL levels may rise. This rapid and sensitive biomarker supports veterinarians in making timely and informed decisions to improve patient outcomes.
