Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), also known as Müllerian-inhibiting hormone (MIH), is a glycoprotein hormone within the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily, which also includes inhibins and activins. It plays a crucial role in sexual differentiation during fetal development, where it is secreted by Sertoli cells in the male fetus under the regulation of SOX9. This secretion causes regression of the Müllerian ducts, preventing the development of female reproductive structures such as the uterus and fallopian tubes. In females, AMH is produced by granulosa cells of preantral and small antral follicles in the ovaries, serving as an indicator of ovarian follicle reserve.
Clinically, AMH serves as a sensitive biomarker for assessing ovarian reserve and function. It is frequently used in fertility assessments to evaluate a woman’s reproductive lifespan and predict ovarian response to assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Unlike other hormones, AMH levels remain relatively stable throughout the menstrual cycle, making it a reliable marker. In addition, diminished or undetectable AMH levels are indicative of premature ovarian insufficiency or ovarian failure, often observed in women post-chemotherapy or with certain autoimmune conditions.
In research settings, AMH provides a valuable tool for investigating folliculogenesis, ovarian aging, and the impact of environmental or therapeutic exposures on fertility. It is also being explored in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where elevated levels can reflect an increased number of small follicles. As a hormone involved in both reproductive development and ovarian function, AMH continues to offer broad utility across endocrinology, gynecology, and developmental biology.
