Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is an essential nutrient whose biologically active form, thiamine pyrophosphate, serves as a critical co-enzyme in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. It supports key metabolic processes in the nervous system, heart, muscles, and blood cells by helping convert carbohydrates into usable energy. Deficiency of vitamin B1 can lead to serious neurological and cardiovascular disorders, including Beriberi, Wernicke’s encephalopathy, Korsakoff syndrome, and certain types of paralysis or myopathy. Deficiency is most common in individuals with malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, or those undergoing dialysis or receiving glucose without adequate thiamine stores.

Clinically and in research settings, measuring vitamin B1 levels is important for evaluating suspected deficiency, monitoring patients receiving total parenteral nutrition, assessing disorders of amino acid metabolism, or investigating malabsorption syndromes. It is also useful in cases of suspected neuritis or neurologic dysfunction linked to thiamine status. Ensuring adequate vitamin B1 levels is essential for maintaining normal neurological and cardiac function.

The Vitamin B1 test kit provides a microbiological method for quantifying total vitamin B1 in whole blood. Using Lactobacillus fermentum–coated microtiter plates, the assay measures vitamin B1–dependent bacterial growth, which is proportional to thiamine concentration. After incubation, turbidity is read by an ELISA reader and compared with a standard curve, enabling accurate determination of biologically relevant vitamin B1 levels for diagnostic and research applications.
