Prealbumin, also known as transthyretin (TTR), is a liver-synthesized plasma protein that functions primarily as a transporter of thyroxine (T4) and retinol-binding protein–vitamin A complex. In mice, as in humans, prealbumin has a short half-life (~2 days), making it a sensitive biomarker for acute changes in nutritional status, liver function, and protein metabolism. Unlike albumin, which reflects long-term protein status, prealbumin provides a rapid indicator of protein synthesis and systemic homeostasis.
In research settings, mouse prealbumin is used to study nutritional interventions, liver disease models, and metabolic disorders. It serves as a biomarker for monitoring protein-energy malnutrition, hepatic dysfunction, and recovery from injury or surgery in preclinical studies. Prealbumin levels can also be useful in evaluating therapeutic interventions aimed at restoring protein metabolism or organ function.
In clinical and translational contexts, prealbumin measurement in mouse models helps researchers simulate human conditions such as malnutrition, liver insufficiency, and acute-phase responses. Monitoring prealbumin levels provides insight into rapid changes in protein status, systemic inflammation, or recovery from critical illness, supporting the development of therapeutic strategies and bridging preclinical findings to clinical applications.
