Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is the first antibody isotype produced during an immune response and plays a critical role in the early stages of host defense. In guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), IgM is a pentameric immunoglobulin with a molecular weight of approximately 900 kDa, structurally similar to IgM in other mammalian species. It is primarily expressed on the surface of immature B cells and secreted during the primary immune response, where it facilitates complement activation and antigen agglutination. Guinea pig IgM can be detected in serum and other biological fluids using species-specific immunoassays, serving as a useful biomarker for immune activation and humoral response.
