Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a class of antibodies primarily involved in allergic and hypersensitivity reactions. In cats (Felis catus), feline IgE plays a similar immunological role to that observed in other mammals, mediating responses against allergens and certain parasitic infections. Feline IgE is produced by plasma cells following activation of Th2-type immune responses and binds to high-affinity IgE receptors (FcεRI) on mast cells and basophils. Upon re-exposure to an allergen, cross-linking of bound IgE triggers the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, leading to pruritus, dermatitis, or respiratory symptoms. Structurally and functionally, feline IgE shares many conserved features with its human and canine counterparts, though species-specific assays are required for detection due to molecular differences.

Research and Clinical Applications:
In research settings, quantification of feline IgE serves as a valuable biomarker for investigating allergic mechanisms, immune regulation, and host–parasite interactions. Studies often use feline IgE to model atopic diseases or to evaluate the efficacy of immunotherapies and allergen-specific desensitization treatments. Clinically, measurement of serum IgE levels or allergen-specific IgE is used to support the diagnosis of hypersensitivity disorders, such as atopic dermatitis or asthma-like syndromes in cats. Although total IgE levels alone are not always diagnostic, allergen-specific IgE testing (e.g., via ELISA or immunoassays) aids in identifying environmental or dietary triggers. Thus, feline IgE serves as both a diagnostic tool and a key research marker in understanding allergic pathophysiology and guiding therapeutic strategies in veterinary medicine.
