C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase protein synthesized primarily by the liver in response to inflammation, tissue injury, or infection. In dogs, CRP is considered one of the most sensitive biomarkers of systemic inflammation, often increasing rapidly—up to 100-fold—within 24–48 hours following an inflammatory stimulus. The production of CRP is mainly induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Unlike some other acute-phase proteins, canine CRP (cCRP) shows a quick response both in onset and resolution, making it an excellent marker for monitoring the progression or remission of disease processes.

In a research setting, cCRP serves as a valuable biomarker for studying the pathophysiology of inflammation, infection, and immune-mediated diseases in dogs. It is widely used to evaluate the effects of anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial therapies, assess surgical trauma responses, and investigate the mechanisms of acute-phase protein regulation. Standardized immunoassays specific to canine CRP have been developed to allow precise quantification in serum or plasma, facilitating consistent comparisons across studies.

Clinically, measurement of cCRP is used as a supportive diagnostic and prognostic tool in veterinary medicine. Elevated CRP concentrations can indicate systemic inflammation associated with conditions such as bacterial infections, pancreatitis, neoplasia, or immune-mediated diseases. Monitoring CRP levels can help veterinarians assess treatment efficacy and disease progression, as levels tend to decrease rapidly with successful therapy. While CRP is non-specific and cannot identify the exact cause of inflammation, its sensitivity and dynamic response make it an essential marker for both clinical management and translational research in canine health.
