Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an incretin hormone secreted primarily by intestinal L-cells in response to nutrient intake. In its active form, GLP-1 (7-36) amide or GLP-1 (7-37) plays a critical role in glucose homeostasis by stimulating insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon release, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety. However, active GLP-1 is rapidly degraded in circulation by the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), giving it a very short half-life of only a few minutes.
