The Serotonin Ultrasensitive ELISA Kit is intended for the quantitative determination of serotonin in biological fluids. The Serotonin Ultrasensitive ELISA Kit is for research use only and not to be used in clinical, therapeutic or diagnostic procedures.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter synthesized primarily from the amino acid tryptophan. It is produced both in the central nervous system—mainly in the raphe nuclei of the brainstem—and peripherally in the gastrointestinal tract, where it regulates intestinal motility. Serotonin plays a fundamental role in mood regulation, sleep, appetite, thermoregulation, and pain perception. As a biomarker, serotonin reflects the functioning of serotonergic pathways, which are crucial for maintaining emotional and physiological homeostasis. Measurements can be made in plasma, urine, or cerebrospinal fluid, often alongside its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), to assess serotonin turnover.

In research settings, serotonin serves as a key biomarker for investigating neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and autism spectrum disorders. Altered serotonin levels or receptor function are closely associated with affective and behavioral changes, making it a central focus of psychopharmacological studies. Researchers also use serotonin biomarkers to evaluate the effects of medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), psychedelic compounds, and diet on serotonergic signaling. Beyond psychiatry, serotonin is studied in relation to cardiovascular function, platelet aggregation, and gut-brain communication, reflecting its wide physiological influence.
